Story Time: How Second Draft Strategy Started
Sophomore year, I paused my finance and accounting degree at CU Boulder and moved to Salt Lake City. I didn’t have a clear plan—just knew I wanted real-world experience. So I walked into local accounting firms with my résumé and asked if anyone needed help.
Eventually I landed a data entry internship at a small firm. Not glamorous, but it got my foot in the door. A couple weeks in, they asked if I could rebuild their homepage. I said yes, and two days later the new site was live.
That’s when I started asking questions. Who’s this site for? What’s the strategy? Segmentation? Brand POV? I wasn’t trying to be annoying—I just wanted to build something that made sense. But the answer I got was basically:
“It’s all kind of in our heads. We mostly rely on referrals.”
Which… fine. But they had also hired a marketing agency—one that specializes in accountants. And yet nobody had bothered to sit down and create a real marketing plan. No audience map. No messaging framework. Nothing. Just vague direction, vibes, and invoices.
That’s when it clicked. I’m wired to think in systems. Most accountants aren’t wired to market at all. And the people they hire to help often don’t get their world—or worse, just take their money and play it safe.
So I built Second Draft Strategy: a consultancy for service businesses that are tired of winging it and ready to scale. No fluff. No buzzwords. Just clear positioning, smart systems, and marketing that actually maps to how your business runs.
Because most firms aren’t broken. They’re just stuck on a rough first draft. I’m here for the rewrite.
